Insect ID 1.2

Insect ID 1.2

Insect ID Publisher's Description

You can use Insect ID to identify and name an insect. Insect ID is a dichotomous key; you answer a series of questions about the insect to move up a binary decision tree. You will end up with the Order of the insect along with some suggested species. IMPORTANT: This Key will only identify insects to a specific Order, it does not identify to the species level (you'll require a specialized book for that). Insect ID will only work for ADULT insects, it is not intended for juvenile insects and larvae/caterpillars so make sure you are trying to identify an adult insect. The file that you downloaded, InsectIDx.prc, should be Hot Sync'ed to your Palm Pilot. It is a self-extracting file and after installation you will see the insect icon on your applications screen. To start, tap the insect icon. To identify an insect, study the two alternatives in each frame. Tap the "OK" button below the text that best describes your insect. Eventually you will arrive at a frame that gives the Order of your insect along with some members of that order as examples. The "Back" button lets you retrace your path through the key. If you need to know the species of your insect, consult a book on insects such as "Insects" Donald J. Borror/Richard E. White, The Peterson Field Guide Series.
